Tactical K9 Handle (for long line)

The new Tactical K9 Handle is a tactical version of the Security Leash Handle that is now available for law enforcement and military use. The only difference between the law enforcement and "civilian" version is the addition of a large standard snap spring.

The Tactical K9 Handle is intended to assist law enforcement and military K9 handlers when they deploy in a tactical operation using a long line during a search or track. The dual-purpose handle serves as an "anchor" by attaching it to the end of one of the Tactical Lead Extensions or a standard long line to better secure and control the line as the dog deploys. The snap spring allows the handle to easily attach and accommodate up to a one-inch standard nylon long line. The handle can also be used separately as a traffic lead.

I conducted testing and personally observed the handles in use by K9 teams in California and Brazil during training for tactical building and small area searches. At first, the handles do not get a respectable response due to being “unusually different” because of the ski-type handle appearance. The respect and approval for the handle comes after experiencing the benefits firsthand.

When a handler believes all of his long line will be deployed and the length will be maximized, most of the handlers started their search by holding the handle when the dog was first deployed. During a lengthy track, the handle is much easier and more comfortable for the handler to hold than the traditional long lines. The long line is more secured with the handle attached to it to help prevent a breakaway. The handles are padded and cannot collapse on the hand or get wrapped around the wrist.

The handle may get easily tangled on furniture legs or such if the long ling is released with the handle attached in the search area. If it becomes necessary to release the long line, the handle can be simply detached in advance. The Tactical K9 Handle may not be suitable for every deployment or search area, but it should be readily available if needed.

The Tactical K9 Handle is designed with quality materials and durable heavy-duty hardware. The handle has a cushion grip with an attached steel spring snap. The overall length is 15 inches. The rope portion of the handle is made from high-tech marine-grade polypropylene and is UV and abrasion resistant.
